And, more than 70 folks turned out in March to complete the clearing of two viewing areas overlooking the park’s mangrove restoration areas. The mangrove overlooks are part of a nature trail system in the park.

"I had a GREAT time. The park service staff made some hard work enjoyable and I would recommended eco-VolunteerUSA opportunities to my friends. When can I come back?"

Hats off to the students from Florida Atlantic University who broke a sweat on their spring break to pitch on exotic plant removal for a day long effort at the beautiful state park in Key West.
The Florida Park Service said, “The volunteers from FAU were great! They worked on exotic plant removal, which is a tough job, and they accomplished so much more than we expected in such a short period of time.”

Wekiwa Springs State Park - Completed March 2010

More than 150 outdoor lovers turned out for a family-friendly eco-Volunteer USA TM experience at Wekiwa Springs State Park for a week in March. The volunteers included local Girl Scout troop members, a youth group, Disney employees and many more individuals and families. The volunteers have been sprucing up the park’s popular youth camp, repairing and painting 25 on-site buildings. AAA Florida generously donated funds to cover paint and supplies cost for the project.

“In six days 150+ volunteers completed painting the buildings in the youth camp. Our park staff could not complete this project so quickly, nor could we have funded it. Volunteers and AAA purchasing the paint and supplies makes all the difference to get ready for summer campers. We want to thank everyone – the families, individuals, scout troops, Disney employees and AAA,” said Park Manager, Warren Poplin.

eco-Volunteer USA community service projects are managed by Volunteer USA, in partnership with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection’s Park Service and VISIT FLORIDA. The goal is to engage Florida residents and tourists to give back to our pristine environment, especially at a time when park maintenance budgets have been severely cut.

“I had a great time this weekend, it was my first time volunteering and overall it was a great experience. I felt a great sense of accomplishment after seeing the finished project. I would do it again if I had the opportunity” said volunteer Tonya Donnelly.
