September 11, 8am-12:30pm - Tomoka State Park, Volusia Co, FL - "Clean & Read" in honor of National Literacy Month

eco-Volunteers will assist park staff to clean and repair nature trail signage along the 1 mile nature trail that wind through the park’s beautiful natural forests. “Clean and Read” is an opportunity for participants to read and learn about the many facets of a hardwood hammock, a natural plant community.

Number of Volunteers Needed: 25
Equipment Required: We recommend the use of insect repellent, sunscreen, bring a refillable water bottle, and wear long pants and sleeves, close-toed shoes, hat and gloves. The park will provide cold water for drinking, and loan of a pair of used gloves for those that need them.
Family Friendly: Yes, children must be a minimum of age 12, accompanied by an adult.

September 12, 9am-noon - Jonathan Dickinson State Park, Martin Co, FL - Invasive Plant Round-Up
Requires pulling non-native plants by hand, making sure to get the roots. Some may be placed on the ground most need to be bagged and dumped, especially if seed pods are visible.

Number of Volunteers Needed: 30
Equipment Required: Please bring a refillable water bottle, work gloves, wear a hat, long-sleeve shirt and pants, bring sunscreen and bug protection.
Family Friendly: Yes, children must be a minimum of age 12, accompanied by an adult.

September 18, 9am-1pm - Hillsborough River State Park, Fort Foster Historic Site, Hillsborough Co, FL - River & Trail Clean-Up
Assist park staff, park volunteers and AmeriCorps members in the clean-up efforts of the portion of the Hillsborough River within the park boundaries, the river banks, and the beautiful hiking trails that wind through the park’s beautiful forests. The access road and grounds of the Fort Foster Historic Site will also be included in the clean-up efforts.

Upon completion of the clean-up project, participants will be welcome to explore and enjoy Hillsborough River State Park at their leisure. We offer several activities at the park for your enjoyment including camping, hiking, biking, canoeing, fishing, playgrounds, picnic areas, and a restaurant.

Equipment Required: We strongly recommend the use of insect repellent, sunscreen, a refillable water bottle, and wear a hat and gloves. The park will provide cold water for drinking, and a pair of used, light cotton gloves for those that need them.

September 18, 9am-1pm - Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park, Pinellas Co, FL - Trail Trimming
eco-Volunteers will assist park staff in trail maintenance including trimming vegetation, removing trip hazards, and trash pick-up.

Upon completion of the clean-up project, participants are welcome to explore and enjoy the park. eco-Volunteers can enjoy outdoor activities such as nature trails, paved biking trails, a historic lighthouse and compound, over one mile of pristine beach with intact beach dune ecosystem, kayak rentals and spectacular snorkeling opportunities. http://www.floridastateparks.org/capeflorida/default.cfm.

NATIONAL "PUBLIC LANDS" DAY, September 25, 2010

September 25, 9am-noon - Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings Historic State Park, Alachua Co, FL - Farm Day
Help clean up along the trails, paths and around the historic buildings at the Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings historic farm, a National Historic Landmark. The work includes weeding and hoeing paths to the farmyard and around the major buildings, including the tenant house, barn and historic farmyard. The more skilled and delicate work of weeding the citrus may be included. If there are enough volunteers, a trail clean up will be tackled. A team for trash pickup on the roadway fronting the park and the parking area will be included.

Number of Volunteers Needed: 30
Equipment Required: We recommend sunscreen, a refillable water bottle, and wear hat and gloves. For some areas, an insect repellent is recommended. The park will provide drinking water.
Family Friendly: Yes, children must be a minimum of age 12, accompanied by an adult.

eco-Volunteers will help remove the invasive exotic plant, Brazilian Pepper by hand pulling seedlings and small saplings.

September 25, 9am-noon - Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park, Alachua Co, FL - Park Spruce-Up
Assist park staff and other volunteers to clean-up the main park facilities including the campground, buildings, boardwalks, Visitor Center, trails, and towers. This project involves light maintenance (minor repairs, painting, cleaning, etc).

Upon completion of the project, participants are invited to explore the park at their leisure, including observing wildlife at the La Chua trail, visiting our recreation area, Visitor Center, 50 foot observation tower, or hiking or biking along one of our many trails.

Number of Volunteers Needed: 40
Equipment Required: We strongly recommend insect repellent and sunscreen. Bring a refillable water bottle, and wear hat and gloves, hiking boots, or work shoes if you have them. The park will provide cold water for drinking, and a pair of used, light cotton gloves for those that need them. If you have a hammer, or pruning shears, they might come in handy.
Family Friendly: Yes, children must be a minimum of age 12, accompanied by an adult.

September 25, 9am-noon - Washington Oaks State Park, Flagler Co, FL - Coastal Clean-Up
The project is picking up trash found on the beach. The Coastal Clean-Up Day is an international event with thousands of people cleaning up our coasts on this day; you can be a part of keeping our beaches beautiful.

Upon completion of the clean-up project, participants are welcome to explore and enjoy the state park. We offer many activities at the park for your enjoyment including hiking, biking, fishing, a playground, a beautiful beach, picnic areas, and a gift shop.

Number of Volunteers Needed: 20
Equipment Required: We recommend insect repellent, sunscreen, a refillable water bottle, and wearing of a hat and gloves. The park will provide cold water for drinking, and a pair of used, light cotton gloves for those that need them.

September 25, 8am-12:30pm - Alafia River State Park, Hillsborough Co, FL - Exotic Plant Removal
Volunteers will assist park staff by removing non-native plants rattlebox and periwinkle from along roadsides. This project will help the park with its ongoing mission of restoring natural lands to their original condition. Park staff will provide a brief group orientation about the park, exotic plants and the projects' benefits to wildlife.

September 25, 8am-4pm - Fort Mose Historic State Park, St. Johns Co, FL - Exotic Plant Removal
Volunteers will assist an AmeriCorps member to remove invasive exotic plants within various areas of the park. Ongoing exotic plant removal projects are instrumental to the overall natural lands restoration goals of both the park and State of Florida.

Equipment Required: Please bring lunch, work gloves, insect repellent, sunscreen, and water.

Travel Information:The park is located at 15 Fort Mose Trail, St. Augustine, Florida 32080. From St. Augustine: From downtown St. Augustine, drive north on A1A. At the carousel (you read it correctly), continue straight north on San Marco. (A1A turns right towards Vilano Beach. Don't go that way.) San Marco merges with Hwy 1. Shortly after the merge, look for a bronze statue on the right and a sign for Fort Mose. Turn right on Fort Mose Trail. Fort Mose Trail dead ends into Fort Mose picnic area and parking lot.

eco-Volunteers will assist park staff and park volunteers in a clean up effort on the Beach at Washington Oaks Gardens State Park. The project is to pick up any trash found on the beach. The Coastal Clean Up Day is an international event, with thousands of people cleaning up our coasts on this day you can be a part of keeping our beaches beautiful.

September 25, 9am-1pm - Oscar Scherer State Park, Pinellas Co, FL - Veggie Fantastic & Lunch Provided

eco-Volunteers will pick up trash, clean benches, straighten signs and trim back vegetation. Playground restoration will include spreading mulch, cleaning playground equipment, fixing broken barriers, pulling weeds and raking. Lunch is provided by The Friends of Oscar Scherer State Park.

October 2, 9am-noon - Jonathan Dickinson State Park, Martin Co, FL - Mini-environmental Amphitheater
eco-Volunteers will assist park staff with clearing trees and brush along the Loxahatchee River. Prepare to get wet. A mini-amphitheater with a stage and viewing screen was built and the trees and brush behind the screen need to be cleared so there is a clear view of the “Wild and Scenic” Loxahatchee River.

Number of Volunteers Needed: 15
b>Work Level:Moderate to Difficult. The project requires cutting trees and brush along and in the river, hauling and lifting. Plan on getting wet.
Equipment Required: Please bring a refillable water bottle, work gloves, wear a hat, closed-toe shoes, long-sleeve shirt and pants, bring a towel, change of clothes, sunscreen and bug protection.
Family Friendly: Appropriate for students and adults.

October 9, 9am-1pm - Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park, Pinellas Co, FL - Restoration Area Enhancement
eco-Volunteers will move 300 feet of fencing in a picnic area near the beach access paths to expand a beach sand dune restoration area.

October 16, 9am-1pm - Hillsborough River State Park, Hillsborough Co, FL - Paint Historic Fort Foster
Assist park staff, park volunteers and AmeriCorps members to paint one or more historic structures within Hillsborough River State Park. The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) constructed the buildings during the late 1930’s and early 1940’s, and maintaining their appearance and weather-readiness is crucial to prolonging their longevity.

October 16, 9am-12pm - Honeymoon Island State Park, Pinellas Co, FL - Coastal Clean-Up
eco-Volunteers will help 'Keep Pinellas Beautiful' to clean-up trash on one of the state's most popular beaches.

Number of Volunteers Needed: 75-100
Equipment Required: We recommend the use of insect repellent and sunscreen. Bring lunch, a refillable water bottle, and wear a hat and gloves. The park will provide cold water for drinking, gloves and trash bags.

NATIONAL "MAKE A DIFFERENCE" DAY, October 23, 2010

October 23, 9am-noon -Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park, Alachua Co, FL - Woods & Water Clean-Up
Assist park staff and park volunteers in the clean-up of the Sweetwater Branch, Lake Wauberg, Prairie Creek, and other locations. We will target litter and invasive plants. Some participants will work on foot along the Sweetwater Branch at the north end of the park, some will paddle the edge of Lake Wauberg, and others will work along Prairie Creek at the Hwy 441 boardwalk.

Number of Volunteers Needed: 40
Equipment Required: We recommend insect repellent, sunscreen, a refillable water bottle, and that you wear a hat, gloves, and rubber boots, hiking boots, or work shoes if you have them. The park will provide cold water for drinking and a pair of used light cotton gloves for those that need them.
Family Friendly: Yes, children must be a minimum of age 12, accompanied by an adult.
Travel Information: The park is located at 100 Savannah Blvd., Micanopy Florida 32667. The main park entrance is located 10 miles south of Gainesville, in Micanopy, on the east side of US 441. October 23, 8am-4pm - Fort Mose Historic State Park, St. Johns Co, FL - Save A Historic Fort
Volunteers will help stabilize the shore of an island in Fort Mose Historic State Park, protecting the historic second Fort Mose, located on a small island in the salt marsh. The island is eroding because of the tidal influence. If left unprotected, the 1730s archeological site will be damaged. Volunteers and park staff will bag oyster shell and load it onto a boat, work in muddy and wet conditions, walk through a salt marsh to the island and deposit the shell.

Number of Volunteers Needed:30
Equipment Required: Bring lunch. Wear boots or shoes that tie securely, work gloves, hat, sunscreen, insect spray, and a change of clothes.
Family Friendly: Yes, children must be a minimum of age 16, accompanied by an adult.
Travel Information: From St. Augustine: From downtown St. Augustine, drive north on A1A. At the carousel (you read it correctly), continue straight north on San Marco. (A1A turns right towards Vilano Beach. Don't go that way.) San Marco merges with Hwy 1. Shortly after the merge, look for a bronze statue on the right and a sign for Fort Mose. Turn right on Fort Mose Trail. Fort Mose Trail dead ends into Fort Mose picnic area and parking lot.

OR: From Hwy 1 in St. Augustine, drive north past Hwy 16. Look for a bronze statue on the right and a sign for Fort Mose. Turn right on Fort Mose Trail. Fort Mose Trail dead ends into Fort Mose picnic area and parking lot.

From Jacksonville: Drive south on Hwy 1. Turn left on Fort Mose Trail. (If you pass Hwy 16 you've missed Fort Mose Trail.) Fort Mose Trail dead ends into Fort Mose picnic area and parking lot.

Assist park staff build fences to protect newly planted trees, maritime hammock and ancient dune within the parks’ campground.

Upon completion of the project, participants will be welcome to explore and enjoy Anastasia State Park at their leisure. We offer several activities at the park for your enjoyment including camping, hiking, biking, canoeing, fishing, playgrounds, picnic areas, and a restaurant.

Number of Volunteers Needed: 15
Equipment Required: We recommend using insect repellent and sunscreen; Bring lunch, a refillable water bottle, and wear a hat and gloves. The park will provide cold water for drinking, and all materials.

Volunteers will sand and repaint electrical boxes in the campground. The campground is temporarily closed while under construction for sewer up-grade. This is a project that we would like to accomplish while the campground is closed.

Upon completion of the project, participants will be welcome to explore and enjoy Wekiwa Springs State Park at their leisure. We offer several activities at the park for your enjoyment including hiking, biking, canoeing, playgrounds, picnic areas and a cool swim in our main attraction Wekiwa Springs!

eco-Volunteers will assist park staff, park volunteers and AmeriCorps members in trash pick-up around the fort, and sweeping and cleaning the interior of Fort Foster. Fort Foster is a 2nd Seminole War era replica fort, located at and managed by Hillsborough River State Park. This fort is the last standing replica of its kind.

Upon completion eco-Volunteers are welcome to explore and enjoy Hillsborough River State Park. We offer camping, hiking, biking, canoeing, fishing, playgrounds, picnic areas, and a restaurant.
